February 11 – A Leisurely Morning in Bora Bora and a flight to Papeete, Tahiti, French Polynesia

After breakfast it was back to the room.  We spent a good bit of the morning packing and Mary worked on photographs and the blog, trying to catch up a little bit.  The resort agreed to let us do a late checkout as our ride to the airport isn’t until around 2:45.

A map of Bora Bora.

Of course, we were greeted by our resident flock of Noddies.  Sort of brings back memories of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds.

While at the airport we were able to spend a bit of time inspecting this map of French Polynesia showing the five archipelagos.  The total land area adds up to only about the size of the small country of Luxembourg.  However, counting all of the water area overall area is huge.  About 1.9 square miles (5 million square kilometers).  That makes it the 7th largest country in the world, coming in between Australia and India.

A couple photos of the small Bora Bora airport.  As you can see, the airport is right by the water.

Bora Bora from the air.

The flight took us over Moorea, where we got a few more photos.

Flying over Mo'orea.  We could see the reef and the lagoon where we had anchored a few days ago quite well.

Flying into Tahiti.

We were in the Papeete hotel by late afternoon.  The hotel, the Intercontinental Resort, was only about a 10-minute drive from the airport.

It is hot and humid here too.

This evening, they had a massive buffet (about 60% was seafood, which we don’t eat).  And we ended up with front row seats to the evening’s entertainment, a Marquesan Dance Show.

Lots of drumming…

fireworks,

and great dancing.

They even got some of the audience up to participate.
